0The Gregorian SE16 Pub & Kitchen – REVIEW
Sitting pretty in the heart of Bermondsey, the Gregorian with her mock-Tudor exterior and elaborate trimmings quietly invites in all who glimpse at her. Including us.
Upon entering through the large come-on-and-all entrance we are greeted by smiling bartenders. The changes are noticeable – Antic’s signature style fills the large open space; books, vintage trinkets, shabby chic decor and historical mementos.
The Gregorian is the most recent Antic collective’s labour of love. They manage to take a much-loved building and community place and keep that essence whilst bringing it into the future. The menu features a large selection of English traditions but also exciting new fare for all palettes including exotic desserts, traditional plates and foreign tastes.
Sitting in a quiet but cosy side room, we were served a light Aperol Spritz – a mix of Prosecco, soda water & lemon; simple stuff, with a hint of sass. Perfect to start your night off. To begin our Gregorian foodie adventure, our well-presented Crayfish Avocado Salad with made it’s appearance. With a tangy and sweet burst of flavour, and fresh feeling we’d recommend as a great addition to a warm summers’ evening. The Merguez Sausage with baked Falafel took us by surprise; the Harissa sauce delivered a kick while the natural yoghurt soothed. Perfect combo. Steak & Chips (the most popular dish with locals and juiced up with Veal gravy) along with a bartender-recommended Lemon & Thyme Chicken with Rosemary Potatoes (and well-seasoned extra crispy skin) rounded off a perfect evening. Serious compliments to the chef.
Your trip to the Gregorian won’t end once your meal or drink does, you’ll more than likely be drawn into a discussion at the bar or chin-wag with the servers; we laughed and chatted until closing!
With locals milling about and an extra-hungry post-match football team joining us, the Gregorian really does live up to its Bermondsey roots; keeping community at its heart. You’ll find local characters and curious visitors alike, which keeps the original spirit of the much-loved building at the epicentre. It’s spacious dining areas are great for large events, and the more cosy are perfect for intimate moments- with plenty of quirky trinkets and decoration to comment on if the conversation stalls!
The Gregorian is open from 4pm – 11/12pm and regularly switches up it’s menus with exciting plates. Food and drinks can set you back anywhere from £3 up.
